Debbie Down - Speech and Language Therapist
I knew I wanted to be a Speech and Language Therapist the minute I heard about the job from the careers advisor at secondary school. Twenty-two years later, and being able to give children and young people their voice by supporting and developing their ability to communicate with others remains the greatest possible reward. I especially enjoy advising on ways to adapt to challenges within the home or school environment; this might include someone’s access to learning, or simply to the most important thing for them at that moment, be it asking for something in a café, going to an airport for the first time, moving house, coping with the unexpected noise of a fire engine passing, or finishing a turn on something fun. I love gaming, reading comics and watching films, and recently taught myself crochet knitting. I am looking forward to being able to see live music again, as this is something that I really missed during lockdown. I have two children in primary school, so balancing work and family life is always an enjoyable juggle.
